Lionel Messi and Barcelona resume their La Liga title defence at Mallorca. The champions have an opportunity to extend their lead over Real Madrid to five points with their rivals hosting Eibar on Sunday.

While the Argentine has overcome a knock, Quique Setien will be delighted to welcome back Luis Suarez too: ”He (Messi) is doing perfectly and will not have any problem,” said coach Quique Setien. He (Suarez) is better than we expected. But the question is how ready he is after so long out and whether he is ready to start.”

Mallorca go into the break two goals down with a lot of work to do. Barcelona are happy, job done so far.

45 mins: Four minutes added on before the half-time break. Mallorca get the cross into the box. Budimir anticipates it well and beats Pique to the ball. He heads it towards goal but puts the ball wide of the far post.

37 mins: GOAL! Braithwaite scores his first goal in La Liga for Barcelona! The back line of Mallorca are panic striken whenever the ball comes into the box. This time Messi gets to the ball first as it comes in from the left, Braithwaite lets it bounce and he fires the half-volley into the back of the net.

Kubo and Sevilla stand over the ball, it is the Real Madrid loanee who takes it and he drills the ball low and hard. Ter Stegen gets down and blocks the shot.

27 mins: Pozo sends in a deep cross from the right wing. Roberto gets in front of Cucho and heads the ball clear. Mallorca take possession of the ball and quickly move it forward. Rodriguez has a shot that is deflected to Kubo on the edge of the box. He shoots and finds a way through the mass of bodies but the shot lacks power and Ter Stegen tidies up easily enough.

24 mins: In Take Kubo Mallorca are showing that they can cause Barcelona a few problems on the counter attack. The visitors seem to have ackowledged this and have slowed the play down, holding the ball up in mid-field.

Kubo makes a very good run into the box from the right hand side. Araujo is unable to keep up with him and Kubo takes and shot forcing Ter Stegen into a full length dive to his right to palm the ball away. Good save from the Barcelona goalkeeper.

18 mins: Barcelona’s right side are causing serious problems for Mallorca, Sergio Roberto seems to have loads of space and time to receive the ball and get his crosses in. Take Kubo is the only threat for the home side but Jordi Alba is dealing with him adequately.

15 mins: Messi slots the ball into the box and Roberto is free once again on the right side. He tries to find Griezmann but a deflection pushes the ball to De Jong instead. A few attempts on goal are blocked by the Mallorca back line and they are able to clear.

12 mins: De Jong and Messi combine to get the ball out to Roberto on the right side of the box. Messi continues his run and directs the cross from Roberto towards goal. The ball takes a deflection and almost falls to Griezmann who can’t quite reach the ball before it goes out for a corner.

9 mins: Take Kubo creates a bit of discomfort for the Barcelona left-back with a run into the box. Jordi Alba is up to the task and blocks the cross out for a throw in. 

Mallorca keep up their momentum down the right wing. Pozo wins the ball and darts into a little space to deliver a cross. Ter Stegen comes out to claim the ball but Mallorca will feel better after that period of play.

6 mins: Messi clips the ball into the box for Jordi Alba who comes running in from the left. Kubo tracks back well and intercepts the ball. 

Barca win it back quickly and send it out to Roberto on the right side. He runs to the edge of the box and fires a low pass across the area. Braithwaite meets the ball and shoots but sends it wide of goal.

3 mins: Mallorca need to compose themselves. Barcelona have had the perfect start to the game, no signs of rust, no lethargy. Pace, skill and strength all on display from the champions.

1 min: GOAL! 65 seconds into the match and Barcelona have the lead! The ball was cut into the centre and given to Jordi Alba. He crossed the ball into the box with his left foot and Vidal powered to the ball and headed it past Reina in goal.
